Plein Air

Plein Air. Definition most widely held. En plein air is the French expression meaning “in the open air”, basically painting outdoors which is something a lot of artists have done without the fancy name.

Plein Air with Paul

Up sometimes at the crack of dawn, supplies already packed the night before and waiting in the back of the car. My fingers are crossed hoping that I haven’t forgotten any key items. Driving to “my spot” that I have previously staked out or if not then hoping to find “the” spot as soon as possible. I then find a level enough area to set up the easel and all the accompanied items. A quick value drawing (dark and light) as the light changes faster as the day goes on…

The Process

Get paper out, squint, draw a sketch good enough for reference then pull out my palette, my easel, containers for water, a sponge and paper towels, brushes at the ready, squint (I’ll do that alot) and lay the 1st brush stroke. At this point I am, hopefully, focused on thinking one to 5 steps ahead as one does especially in watercolor. I pray for good weather, little to no wind, no distractions whether animal or human, and finally for a good start to the painting. If the start falters so goes the day. BUT do I love it, oh absolutely, it is the best feeling in the world especially if the painting works out.

LUCKY ME…I have joined a plein air watercolor group (Plein AIr Buddies) that are part of the Colorado Watercolor Association and they are all professional and exceptional painters. It’s been a little more than two years and I consider myself lucky and blessed to paint with them every Tuesday morning. Make sure to say hi if you see us out and about.
