Painting on the Great Wall of China

I was blessed with the super awesome opportunity allowing me to schedule time to paint a few small plein-aire watercolor paintings while literally standing on the Great Wall of China. A friend was kind enough to shoot a couple of videos and take some photos as well of this awesome adventure.

While painting on the wall I met some very fun and interesting people from all parts of the world including Pakistan, South Korea, Singapore, and Russia. No one was shy about approaching me, chatting and looking over my shoulder. I encountered many languages but art being the universal language I usually got the thumbs up sign with a big smile.

There were rare moments when I felt I had parts of the Wall to myself. We walked quite a bit, including what seemed like 400 stairs, from the drop off area up to the wall itself. I can’t imagine what it would be like in the middle of summer with the sweltering heat and high humidity.

I was so awe struck with the incredible views and magnificence of this incredible structure. As you can see in the photo above, the atmosphere was just perfect. A low point in tour season and the fact that it was not hot nor too cool was the recipe allowing me to stop and paint whenever and wherever I wanted.
